Covington

What started out as a railroad stop later became the city of Covington.

In the 1880s, a railroad surveyor named Covington was commissioned to inspect a railroad line for the Northern Pacific Railroad.

One of the stops he examined was in a fairly destitute area, but it was later dedicated in his name and soon began brimming with residents.

Ten years later, the town had a post office and a store, and the Covington Lumber Co. lured settlers to the area.

Descendents of the Capps family, one of the first families to settle in the area, still live in Covington.

Even though the foundation for the city's history was laid hundreds of years ago, the city wasn't incorporated until 1997.

Today, about 13,800 residents call Covington home. About 64 percent are married, and 90 percent of the housing units are owner-occupied.

Most residents still shop in downtown Covington, even though the city does not have upscale restaurants, a movie theater or performing arts studio. But the residents don't mind much. That's because most would rather have more parks and trials for biking and walking.

But the city does have a highly active community center featuring senior programs and classes for youths. Programs include self-defense for children, fencing and karate classes and even a "hypnosis for weight reduction" class.

Occasionally, the center's programs will feature a local celebrity, such as a sports figure.
