University District
As one would expect, the University District is aptly named because of its close location to the University of Washington. Also as one would expect of a neighborhood right next to a large state college, the U-District is home to many of the types of businesses that appeal to college students. It’s a short walk from campus to a plethora of restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, taverns, music stores and other specialty stores that cater to a younger crowd.
Business owners in the U-District were also the beneficiaries of a $9 million improvement project, where the city is re-paved the street and sidewalks along University Way in stages from Northeast Campus Parkway to Northeast 50th Street.
Housing in the neighborhood tends to be multi-family complexes and larger homes that are home to multiple roommates. As is also common in neighborhoods populated by college students – the U District features plenty of art, including the popular "Sasquatch Pushing Over a House" sculpture.
