Lake City
Seattle annexed Lake City in 1957, but the town itself was born years earlier when a railroad worker hung a sign saying "Lake" near the tracks of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
Ethnic Art shops and restaurants have recently sprung up in the area, sharing space with the traditional business mix of strip malls and car dealerships. Many of the recent positive developments can be attributed to revitalization efforts that were started in 1997 by citizen action groups. While new businesses have moved in, tried and true local favorites still prosper. Baker's, founded in 1929 by Ernie and Barbara Baker, is a longtime Lake City favorite, rivaling only Claire's Pantry for drawing big lunchtime crowds.
Additional planned improvements include: trees planted along Auto Row; a gathering area is planned in front of Cranium's Coffee & Collectibles; and bus shelters decorated with art panels. Neighborhood plans also include an art walk and an annual art-in-the-park event to be tied in with a sidewalk sale.
Currently there is only one public art installation in Lake City, but soon there will be more. Paul Sorrey, who designed the sculptures at the Ballard Locks, will be designing new art for Lake City. Wikipedia write up on Lake City
